Faza 03 / Phase 03

Virtualni sastanci tokom karantene

Novosel i prof.

Virtual meetings during the quarantine

Despite the recent unpleasant situation, the meetings are continuing! We have meetings at least twice a week, which is equal to how many we would otherwise have at school.

In the joint group, which we have on the WhatsApp application, prof. Novosel and prof. Roth set different dates for meetings, and students choose the date that suits most of us so that we can all have the opportunity to attend. We have virtual meetings on the Zoom app via a video call. Meetings last an average of 40 minutes and during the meeting, we go through tasks that we have to complete by the set deadline. At each meeting, supervisors share assignments with all groups (bloggers, analysts, designers, …). After that, we go through all the emails and tasks once again, discuss how anyone of us can contribute even more to the project, and comment on our progress. In the end, we ask questions if something is unclear and the supervisors summarize everything that was said at the meetings, and the person in charge of note-taking that day sends the most important information to the WhatsApp group. Data collection and posting on social networks is, in these difficult circumstances, more demanding. That's why we help each other as much as possible.

Given the situation, we made the most of all of our resources to make the meetings as similar as possible. While we are also looking forward to our virtual meetings and are working at the same pace as before, we are also looking forward and eagerly awaiting the return to the classrooms and our daily routines. We look forward to our joint meetings in the chemistry cabinet where we would all, not only work on the project but also hang out with our colleagues who are also part of the project.

Virtual field research

Due to the situation we recently found ourselves in, we didn't have a chance to take a tour of the Faculty of Agriculture, here in Zagreb, but we couldn't miss out on that amazing opportunity, so we took the tour virtually. All the meetings that we were supposed to have in person, we had online, so we could be up to date with all the news about our project.

The first interview was with prof. Domagoj Šimić, who is the manager of the EP01 corn element. He said the project is divided into elements and explained how the project is run by ZCI CroP-BioDiv. After that, we talked to prof. Smiljan Goreta Ban, who leads the element of dissemination and the cabbage/onion element. She emphasized the importance of traditional species and how the main goal of the project is to protect these species from decay. We asked about the presence of the project in the media. She stated that the project is not represented enough in the media, but we hope that our blog and social media activity will change that. Doctoral student Ana Nimac, who is a doctoral student at the element EP08 beans, showed us the phenotyping laboratory where we saw the machines necessary for measuring physiological parameters. She also showed us the outside of the University, showing us the greenhouses, pavilions, and fields for field experiments. In the end, prof. Zlatko Liber, the leader of the element EP08 Dalmatian pyrethrum/sage project, showed us around the, fortunately, undamaged laboratory and explained the importance of integrating traditional and endemic species in production.

Professor Smiljana Goreta told us an interesting anecdote. In the beginning, there were only three scientists who came up with the idea for the project. "We just needed a way of financing the project. We have connected scientific institutions and scientists at a physical level, but the scientific field of the Republic of Croatia is also more connected," she added. The project will, despite the pandemic, continue at the same pace and will, if there is no problem with finances, be done in time.
